FINDING MY VOICE

by ALEXA MORRIS-LOVELL

It’s hard to believe that just three years ago I was a shy teenager wanting to make a contribution to her community, and not sure where to start. When a friend told me about the City of Darwin’s Youth Advisory Group (YAG) I decided to join immediately, and I am so glad that I did.

Three years on, I’m in my final year and I have received so much from YAG- I am a confident public speaker, a youth leader and a voice for the youth in my community. Throughout the years I have had the opportunity to meet so many amazing and inspiring people, both young and old, I’ve been able to talk to council and prominent members of society about issues that affect young people. Yet, the best part is seeing the action coming from those discussions. I love knowing that I have made an active contribution to my community.

Now, you don’t just receive great things from being a part of YAG, you also give. You give so much back to the youth of Darwin, and to the community, but you also give back to Darwin’s Sister City, Dili as well through exchange programs.

In 2013 I applied to be one of the City of Darwin ‘s LAUNCH Youth Events Coordinators for National Youth Week and had an amazing time. Not only did I get to run a four-day festival for National Youth Week, I got to learn practical skills that will stay with me for a lifetime.

The Youth Programs that the City of Darwin Council offer are amazing opportunities to have yours and your friends’ voices heard. If you’re thinking about doing it, don’t think, don’t hesitate, just do. You won’t regret it!
